Coaxial Couplers

Microwave Techniques manufactures coaxial couplers with several types of configurations for high-power RF and microwave applications. Common design types include: directional couplers, quarter-wave loop couplers, vestigial loop couplers, and hybrid couplers. These devices are available in various standard coaxial sizes ranging from 7/8″ to 12″. Set up a call with our RF experts today to discuss your exact requirements.

Coaxial Couplers: Design Types and Overview

Microwave Techniques coaxial couplers portfolio includes several design types. A general overview includes:

Coaxial Couplers
  • 7/8″ to 12″
  • Reflectometers
  • Hybrid couplers
  • Monitor couplers
  • Vestigial loop couplers
  • Quarter wave couplers
  • Various connector types
  • Materials: Cu alloy and Al alloy
  • Broadband and ultra-broadband

Directional Couplers

Quarter Wave Loop

Quarter wave loop coaxial directional couplers offer a relatively flat coupling response over a 10% frequency bandwidth. Specific coupling factors in the range of 15-30 dB are easily attainable with 30 dB directivity.

We can also incorporate external loads, with specifications between 1 to 10 W to accomodate higher coupled power levels, based on your requirements. Padding, or attenuation of the output RF signal prior to the detector is the responsibility of the user. All coaxial coupler electrical data is traceable to the National Bureau of Standards.

Typical Electrical Response
Coupling:15 – 30 dB + 1 dB
VSWR:1.05:1
Directivity:30 dB nominal
Bandwidth:10%

Vestigial Loop Couplers

Vestigial loop coaxial directional couplers are extremely compact. They provide broadband RF measuring capabilities. The monitors and reflectometers exhbit 6 dB per octave response. Units are available in increments from 30 dB through 70 dB coupling factors. In addition to these standard values, other values are made available upon request.
All of Microwave Techniques vestigial loop coupler electrical data is traceable to the National Bureau of Standards.

Typical Electrical Response
Coupling:30 – 70 dB + 1 dB
VSWR:1.05:1
Directivity:30 dB nominal
Bandwidth:10%

Coaxial Hybrid Couplers

Microwave Techniques coaxial couplers of the hybrid style are constructed in sizes up to 12″ diameter. These hybrid couplers reliably combine or split the high RF power levels often seen in scientific, commercial, and military devices. We manufacture our 3 dB 90° air-dielectric transmission line couplers in a variety of configurations and bandwidths. These units can be constructed in various configurations, including stripline and rat-race topologies.

Electrical specifications for quarter-wave hybrid coaxial couplers over a 10% bandwidth are as follows:

Coupling:3 dB + 0.2 dB
Isolation:27 dB minimum
VSWR:1.08:1 maximum
Phase Shift:90° + 2°
Insertion LossLess than 0.1 dB

Our standard hybrid coaxial couplers

  • Crossover: 3 dB, 4.77 dB, 6 dB, 10 dB
  • Non-Crossover: 3 dB, 4.77 dB, 6 dB, 10 dB
  • Inline: 3 dB, 4.77 dB, 6 dB, 10 dB

Coaxial Type N Directional Couplers

Microwave Techniques coaxial type N directional couplers are ideal for your low power measurement needs. These low cost couplers are compact and designed to go inline wherever you have a Type N cable type connection. With flat coupling and high directivity over the typical 10% bandwidth, these devices are a high value option for system integration applications. Typically, power handling is 200 Watts (or more), depending on frequency and coupling value.

RF Coaxial Couplers
Typical Electrical Response
Coupling Range:10 – 30 dB + 1 dB
VSWR:1.05:1
Directivity:25 dB nominal
Bandwidth:10%

Other options:

  • Mainline Connectors (in/out): Female/Male or Female/Female
  • Coupled Port: SMA or Type N
  • Type: Monitor or Reflectometer
  • Load Size: 2 Watt (SMA), 5 Watt (SMA), 2 Watt (Type N), 10 Watt (Type N)
